Seminar: Low dimensional hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite materials for applications in optoelectronics and quantum devices

Title: Low dimensional hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite materials for applications in optoelectronics and quantum devices

Abstract:
Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite materials have been studied since 1970s, but they only attracted strong attention in the research community after having been applied in solar cells1. By possessing simultaneously important properties, such as (i) high light absorption (ii) band gap tunability (iii) easy free carrier generation from photon absorption and (iv) balanced electron-hole transport, these materials have yielded an unprecedented increase of solar cells efficiency during a very short period of time2. Recently, these materials have refreshed strong attention by going low dimensional with the use of larger organic cations and different organic-metal molar ratio3. These low dimensional materials exist intrinsically in the crystalline structure by arranging metal halide octahedra in a particular manner. In this seminar, a summary of low dimensional organo-metal halide perovskites will be presented, with applications in optoelectronics. Some recent results of our research group and development direction in synthesizing and applying these low dimensional materials will be shown. Finally, a huge opportunity in fundamental research for quantum phenomena and quantum devices will be discussed.

Biography:
Nguyen Tran Thuat was born in 1980. After leaving High School for Gifted Students, he enrolled as a physics student at the VNU University of Science en route to earning a Bachelor in Physics Honors program. In 2001, Thuat moved to France for his Engineering Degree and Master Degree in Applied Physics Electronics and Optoelectronics at the Ecole Polytechnique. After that he obtained his PhD Degree in Physics at the same school in 2008. He returned as a researcher at the Laboratory for Nanotechnology, VNU Hochiminh City in 2009. Dr. Thuat was appointed to be the head of the Research and Development department of the Laboratory for Nanotechnology in 2010. In 2012 Dr Thuat returned to the VNU Nano and Energy Center; then VNU University of Science as researcher.

As a group leader, Dr. Thuat carries out research programs on nanostructured materials and devices for applications in solar energy, longwave infrared sensors, optoelectronics and quantum devices; as well as performing efforts on setting up a spin-off from research and development results. His research group has published more than 50 international and domestic publications including 23 international ISI papers, 1 Vietnamese patent, 3 Vietnamese pending patents, and 1 US pending patent.
